A State Champion and Two Other Podium Finishes for Lancer Girls at State Track Meet The three Lancer senior girls who competed at the WIAA Div. 3 State Track and Field meet on Friday and Saturday excelled in their events, as the Lancers captured a state championship in the shot put and podium finishes in triple jump and the 3200m run. MonRaye Ermis became just the third Lancer to win a state track and field championship in the WIAA era, throwing the shot put 39' 1.25" to take the gold medal and capture 10 points for the Lancers on Friday. Second place was a 38' 6.25" throw by Bailey Angell of Gilman. Ermis took the early lead in the event, throwing 38' 11" with her second of three throws in prelims, and took that lead from the preliminary round into the finals, with none of the other nine finalists besting her. Ermis extended her lead with that 39+' throw, her sixth throw, which was the final throw in the event. It was the second time Ermis threw over 39' this season and was just 2.25" under her school record throw, which she set at the sectional meet the week before. Emily Marohn competed in three events at state, highlighted by her 3rd place finish in the girls triple jump on Saturday, where she jumped 36' 10.75", a new school record. Marohn jumped well from the get-go, getting a new PR with her first jump of 36' 2.75". The girls D3 triple jump was won by Ava Washburn of Webster, with a 38' 3.25" jump. Marohn also competed in long jump and the 300m hurdles on Friday. She jumped 15' 10.5" in long jump, finishing in 11th place, and ran 49.20 in the prelim races for 12th place in the hurdles, missing out on qualifying for Saturday's finals by a little more than a half-second. Brooklyn Luebke ran in the 3200m run on Friday and the 1600m on Saturday and earned a spot on the awards podium Friday with an 11:21.75 in the 3200m, capturing 4th place. That time broke her previous school record, set just the week before at the sectional meet, by over 22 seconds. The 3200 was won by Kayci Martensen of Benton-Scales Mound-Shullsburg, in 10:59.07. On Saturday Luebke finished 10th in the 1600m race in 5:22.98, running with the lead pack for the first half of the race. Martensen also won the 1600m, in 4:57.05. These three seniors all end their Lancer track and field careers with school records and state medals. This was MonRaye's second career State medal and second visit to the State meet in the last two years, and Brooklyn's third career State medal in her third visit to the State track meet. She earned a total of six state medals in her high school career competing at both the State Cross Country and State Track Meets. The Lancer girls' 21 points at the State meet tied them for 8th in the team standings, out of the 87 Division 3 girls teams that had athletes competing. This was the top team finish among all of Lakeshore-area girls track teams. Full individual and team results for the Girls Div. 3 meet are available here. Congratulations to Brooklyn, Emily, and MonRaye for their success at the State meet and for representing their Savior and their school well as they competed! Next week's Sports Update will include season summaries for all the MLHS spring sports teams, and will list the season-ending and all-conference awards handed out at tonight's Spring Athletic Awards Night being held tonight at MLHS. |
