Baseball Loses to Brillion in WIAA Regional Game; Finishes Season with 6-8 Record

Ryan Dewane prepares for an at-bat against Brillion during the Lancers' WIAA regional game Friday. The Lancers' baseball season came to an end Friday with a 3-1 loss against the Brillion Lions in a WIAA Regional first round game. The game was tied 0-0 through two innings until the bottom of the 3rd when the Lions were able to score 2 runs.  Both teams scored a run in the 4th inning, and the Lancers' defense kept the score 3-1 through the final three innings.

Senior Ethan Menges took the loss for the Lancers giving up 2 hits in 4 innings. Sophomore Noah Czarneski pitched 2 innings and recorded 3 strikeouts.  The Lancer bats were cold as we only managed 2 hits. Junior Sawyer Stuebs was 1 for 3 with an RBI, and Czarneski was also 1 for 3.

The Lancers finish the season with an overall record of 6-8 and 6-6 in the Big East Conference. In a few weeks the Sports Update will include season ending remarks from Coach Durkee as well as a report on year-end awards, which will be handed out at the spring sports season award banquet being held on June 6th at 6:30pm.

Congratulations, Lancer boys, on the season!

Softball Ends Season in WIAA Regional Game with Loss to Stockbridge/Hilbert

The Lancer girls fastpitch softball team's season came to an end with a well-fought contest against Stockbridge/Hilbert in Tuesday's WIAA regional second-round game in Stockbridge.

Catcher Sam Siehr attempts to make an out at home plate during the Lancers' regional softball game at Stockbridge Tuesday. The Lancers scored first and early in the 5-3 loss and played a tough game. We had a 1-0 lead in the first inning and kept our bats alive all game. Stockbridge/Hilbert plated all 5 of their runs in the fourth inning, and the our 2 additional runs in the sixth weren't enough to overcome the deficit. Those sixth inning runs were jumpstarted by junior Jenna Lischka, who got us going with an over-the-fence homerun, while senior Jenna Gries hit the other RBI in that inning.

Coach Erin Hulse commented, "The middle of the lineup did a great job of getting on base -- they did their job! Aubry Schleis pitched an incredible game for her last high school career game." Schleis pitched all 6 Lancer defensive innings, allowing 5 hits and striking out 9, while walking 2. Top Lancer batters were Lischka (2 for 4, RBI), senior Brianna Bessler (2 for 2), and junior Hailey Marohn (2 for 4).

The Lancers finish with a 4-11 record (4-6 Big East). In a few weeks the Sports Update will include season ending remarks from Coach Hulse as well as a report on year-end awards, which will be handed out at the spring sports season award banquet being held on June 6th at 6:30pm.

Congratulations, Lancer girls softball, on a great season using your God-given talents to the fullest!

Girls Track Wins Regionals; Ermis, Luebke, and Marohn Advance to State

The Lancer girls track team had a successful week, winning the WIAA Regional Championship on Monday at Hilbert, and then qualifying six events for State at the Sectional meet Thursday in Rosholt.

Lizzy Kolar is full of determination during her leg of the 4x800m relay at the Sectional track meet in Rosholt Thursday. This was the second year in a row that the Lancer girls won the Regional crown, accumulating 125 points with scoring finishes in 15 events. Howards Grove (82.5 points) and Gibraltar (81.5 points) took 2nd and 3rd, respectively, out of the 12 total schools involved. The top four finishers in each event at Regionals Monday advanced to Sectional competition. First place finishes at Regionals were won by Lancer senior Brooklyn Luebke in the 1600m (5:32.83) and 3200m (12:13.48), senior MonRaye Ermis in the shot put (38’ 10.75”), and senior Emily Marohn in the triple jump (34’ 7.5”). Three of our four relays at Regionals ran season-best times. Full results are at www.wiaawi.org.

The Lancers came to the Sectional meet ready to perform their best, and nearly every athlete at Sectionals had season or lifetime bests in their events, resulting in a 4th place team finish out of 48 teams, the Lancers’ best finish at Sectionals since 2012. Seniors MonRaye Ermis, Brooklyn Luebke, and Emily Marohn qualified for the WIAA State Track Championships due to their top-four finishes at the Sectional meet. Ermis took the Sectional title in the shot put, resetting her school record with a 39’ 3.5” throw. Luebke reset her school records in both the 1600m and 3200m runs, finishing 3rd in each, with times of 5:16.24 and 11:44.70, respectively. And Marohn qualified for State in three events with a 2nd place finish in the triple jump (35’ 7”), a 3rd place in the 300m hurdles (48.92), and a 4th place in the long jump (16’ 2.25”), all lifetime-best marks for her. Full Sectional results are at www.wiaawi.org.

This will be Brooklyn Luebke's third trip to the State meet, qualifying in all three seasons of her high school track career (there was no 2020 track season). MonRaye Ermis returns to State for a second time, and Emily Marohn joins a small group of Lancers who have qualified for State in three events in a single season.

Head Coach Abbey Bubolz commended her track and field athletes on the support they showed their team, "At these big meets we take two alternates for every relay. That means we had kids that came along who were ready to compete, and yet didn't get to, and kids that were asked to step up and fulfilled those duties well. Big shout out to all our faithful alternates that supported their teammates this week."

The WIAA State Track Meet takes place this Friday and Saturday, June 3rd and 4th at UW-La Crosse's Veterans Memorial Stadium. All three divisions compete on those two days; competition for Divisions 2 and 3 starts at 3pm Friday and continues Saturday morning at 10am. Girls long jump and shot put competition for Emily and MonRaye, and the girls 3200m for Brooklyn, will take place on Friday, as well as prelims for the 300m hurdles for Emily. Saturday's competition will include the 1600m and triple jump for Brooklyn and Emily, and finals for the 300m hurdles. Full spectator information and a link to live results for the WIAA State Track meet can be found at www.uwlax.edu/wiaa/spectators. Please note that if you plan to attend the meet, admission tickets must be purchased online ahead of time.

Please plan to attend a send-off for our State-bound track athletes this Thursday at 1:15pm in the southwest parking lot of MLHS. God's blessings to you, Brooklyn, Emily, and MonRaye, as you represent MLHS and your Lord, and give your best at the State meet!
