Girls Track Wins First-Ever Conference Title; WIAA Regional Today

The Lancer girls track and field team captured its first-ever conference title, taking the Big East Conference crown Monday over 12 other schools at Reedsville with 117.5 points, 13.5 points better than second-place Oostburg. The Lancers scored points in every single event except for one. (The top 8 in each event score points.)

Conference champions in their events were senior Brooklyn Luebke, who captured 1st places in the 800m (2:30.32), 1600m (5:27.04), and 3200m (12:20.48), senior MonRaye Ermis, who took 1st in the shot put (38' 2.5") and discus (102' 3"), and senior Emily Marohn with a 1st place in the triple jump (33' 10.5"). Marohn also captured 2nd place in the long jump (14' 11.5"), 5th place in the 100m hurdles (17.32) and 6th place in the 300m hurdles (53.27). Also receiving All-Conference honors with their 2nd place finishes were our girls 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams. The 4x200, consisting of junior Isabella Blauert, sophomore Peyton Luebke, and freshmen Bitsy Blauert and Maren Dewane finished in 1:54.93, while our 4x400 of sophomore Taylor Schuettpelz and freshmen Dewane, B. Blauert, and Addie Korte crossed the finish line in 4:31.60.

Grace Zander pours it on at the finish line to pass a Mishicot runner during the girls 800m race at the Conference Meet in Reedsville.Lancers achieving 4th place finishes were Peyton Luebke in the 200m (28.71) and our 4x800 relay team (11:40.82) of senior Grace Zander, junior Lizzy Kolar, and freshmen Trisha Kiss and Bella Flores. 5th places were won by Schuettpelz in the 400m (1:09.79) and our 4x100m relay (54.42) (same athletes as our 4x200). Full results are on athletic.net.

In addition to their All-Conference honors and championships, two Lancer athletes received additional recognition. All thirteen schools' head coaches were unanimous in awarding Brooklyn Luebke honors as the Female Track Athlete of the Meet (her second year of winning this) and MonRaye Ermis as Female Field Athlete of the Meet.

Head Coach Abbey Bubolz noted, "(Winning conference) is no easy task to accomplish, and it took all the girls' contributions. I had projected them to get 113 points and they exceeded that with 117.5. The MLHS girls' track team has been incredibly successful over the last 50 years, even taking 2nd at State a few times, but never winning a Conference championship. All the pieces have to fall into place on the right day. Monday was that day. If you were following along it was pretty close between Oostburg and our girls. Great job to the girls for their efforts!"

Our varsity track and field teams now start post-season competition, with our boys and girls traveling to Hilbert today (Monday) to compete in the WIAA Division 3 Regional 2D Track Meet against 11 other schools. Field events begin at 3:30pm; running events start at 4:15pm. Admission is $6. Ages 5 and under are free, and no passes are allowed. Live results should be available on pttiming.com.

The top 4 finishers in each event at Regionals then move on to our WIAA Div. 3 Sectional 2 at Rosholt, which is this Thursday. Once again field events start at 3:30pm; running events start at 4:15pm and admission is $7; ages 6 and under are free. Results will be posted after the meet on athletic.net and wiaawi.org. The top 4 in each event at Sectionals qualify for the WIAA State Track Meet at UW-La Crosse, and will compete there on June 3rd and 4th.

Please come to Hilbert and Rosholt this week to support and cheer your Lancer track and field teams!

Many of the boys had season or lifetime bests. The relays were able to get some points from the first heat which is not always easy to do. Great conference meet all around!"

Softball Falls in Two Regular Season Games; WIAA Regional Game Tuesday
The Lancer girls softball team lost their final two regular season games, falling at Sheboygan Lutheran 7-2 on Monday and then losing a non-conference game Tuesday against Brillion, 15-4. They finish the regular season with a 4-10 (4-6 Big East) record and start WIAA post-season play tomorrow (Tuesday) at Stockbridge.

Monday we were ahead early against the Crusaders, but then Sheboygan Lutheran capitalized on some Lancer walks and errors. Offensively in the game the Lancers were led by junior Jenna Lischka, who had 2 singles. Defensively, sophomore Bree Hansen had 3 put outs and 4 assists, and freshman Maya Keil had 9 putouts, with neither committing an error.

Shortstop Jenna Lischka looks to first for a potential out during the game against Brillion Tuesday. Bree Hansen and Hailey Marohn stand ready. On Tuesday we hosted Brillion, falling against a tough Lions team in seven innings by a score of 15-4. Going into the fourth inning, the score was tied 1-1. After several hits, including a few over-the-fence homeruns by the Lions, and a few untimely Lancer errors, Brillion was able to take a commanding lead. However, the Lancers continued to hit the ball hard and get on base throughout the game, recording 11 hits.

Leading Lancer hitters in the game with 2 hits a piece were seniors Aubry Schleis and Maddie Franz, and juniors Jenna Lischka and Sam Siehr. Defensively, Lischka made some incredible plays at short (3 putouts and 4 assists), Hansen had 4 assists, and Keil had 13 putouts and 1 assist. Coach Erin Hulse commented that even though it was a loss, the Lancers were excited for a tough match to help prepare them for their playoff game vs. Stockbridge/Hilbert.

Tuesday our girls JV softball team lost 9-8 to Sheboygan Lutheran in its last game of the season. It was a nailbiter – the Lancers were up the whole game until the sixth inning, and the game also featured Lancer sophomore Emily Rogne and freshman Abby Marohn combine to throw a no-hitter. The JV team finishes the season with a 1-7-1 record.

The Lancers were given a #6 seed in their WIAA Division 4 Region and after a first-round bye, play their first post-season game Tuesday in the second round against #3 seed Stockbridge/Hilbert (15-5, 8-4 Big East). The game will be at the Stockbridge Fireman’s Park at 5:00pm. The winner of that game then plays Thursday in the Regional final against #2 Random Lake or #7 Reedsville.

Head to Stockbridge Tuesday to support your Lancer team and see some great softball!

The Lancers’ 3 runs came in the fifth, and we only managed 2 hits in the game, by seniors Zack Koenig and Hecker, who also had 2 stolen bases. Defensively, Hecker also led in put-outs, with 5, while Koenig, senior Casey Stanzel, and sophomore Caden Stanzel each had 3. Sophomore Brayden Zirbel pitched the first three innings and took the loss in the game; Koenig pitched the next three innings, while senior Ryan Dewane pitched the final inning.

Thursday the Lancers traveled south and shut-out Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah 19-0 in a five-inning contest. Hecker pitched the complete-game win, allowing only 3 hits and no walks while striking out 7 of the 18 batters he faced. Offensively, the Lancers had 15 hits in the game with Hecker going 3 for 5 with an RBI and 2 stolen bases, junior Sawyer Stuebs going 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI, and 2 stolen bases, and Strutz going 2 for 4 including a double and 3 RBIs. The Lancers received a #5 seed in the WIAA Division 3 bracket and travel to Brillion Thursday to take on the #4 seeded Lions (6-9, 5-8 EWC) at 4:30pm in the first round of the post-season. Coach Paul Durkee notes, “I would encourage fans to come to Brillion for the game on Thursday to cheer on the Lancers as we take on the 4 seed Brillion. It will be a team effort this week to get the victory!”

God’s blessings to our Lancer baseball student-athletes!
