Message from the Director of Mission Advancement

Greetings to all of you, our alumni of Manitowoc Lutheran High School,

My name is Kevin Buch and back in mid-November, I accepted the call to be the next Director of Mission Advancement here at Manitowoc Lutheran High School. I am honored to serve in this role and I am looking forward to working with you over the next years. I am humbled that the Federation has entrusted me with this very important work and I pray that God would guide and help me as I learn and grow into this role. It also is bittersweet to think about carrying on the work that Scott Reinhard did so wonderfully for so long. Scott and I were next door neighbors and friends for twenty years and I am excited to continue the work of generating support for our ministry that Scott, Pastor Kock, Ryan Hulse and others have faithfully carried out over the years.

I have served the Lord here at MLHS since 2009. I have been the Admissions Director (student recruitment) and also the Technology Director. Before that, I served for twelve years as principal, teacher, and coach at First German. My wife and I are still active members there. All three of our children are graduates of Lutheran High.

We have many exciting things happening here in our ministry. Our faculty is very gifted and dedicated to teaching the next generation the way of Christ. Our mission statement says it all, Manitowoc Lutheran High School uses its God-given gifts to help each student become thoroughly equipped for paths of service to our Redeemer. Our students are engaged everyday in learning and growing in the classroom. There are also so many opportunities for our students to grow in athletics, music, technology, and the list goes on. All of these programs and opportunities need funding to exist and we thank you for your support for this ministry that we share. More information can be found on our website www.mlhslancers.org and on social media where we have expanded and improved our presence. We would love it if you would follow us on Facebook and Instagram.

Thank you so much for your support for Manitowoc Lutheran High School in the past. Whether that support was prayer or financial, it was much appreciated and very necessary. One of my goals is to make sure that you receive clear and timely communication from your high school. We will be sending out these newsletters on a “every three months or so” basis. If you have classmates that are not getting these, please contact me right away. If you do have any questions at all or you would just like to hear more about the ministry here at MLHS, please give me a call. You can also send me an email or a text message. We can meet in person or just talk on the phone or a video call.

In Christ’s service,

Kevin M. Buch

MLHS Honored at Northeast Wisconsin Manufacturing Alliance Banquet

In October the Resch Expo hosted the Northeast Wisconsin Manufacturing Alliance Banquet in Green Bay. Manitowoc Lutheran High School was one of over 50 schools to be nominated, but the sole winner of the 2022 Brighter Image award. There were many contributing factors; however, a large emphasis is on  how the local high schools partner with business to promote careers in manufacturing. Pictured below are Julie Nass (nee Shambeau '80)  on behalf of CESA 6 and Martin Plocher (MLHS Careers in Technical Education Department Chairman & Capital Campaign Director) who accepted the award on behalf of MLHS. To read more about the award please read the full article by clicking here.

Building Our Future on Christ Capital Campaign

Our children face multiple world views that question their identity and purpose in today’s society. Was it any different when you were in high school? I am guessing not? Something else that is not different now compared to when you were here at MLHS, is the fact that students today continue to receive God’s unconditional love that changes their lives. MLHS’s goal every day is to develop our students to confidently know their identity is in Christ. MLHS school teachers and staff work hard to prepare students for the future and to live out their faith. Just like the MLHS Mission Statement says, “Manitowoc Lutheran High School uses its God-given gifts to help each student become thoroughly equipped for paths of service to our Redeemer.”

Currently MLHS has a student enrollment of 224 students. We will be graduating 54 Seniors in May. Enrollment projections from this past July for the 2023-2024 school year at a 65% reception rate of 8th graders from 10 of our Lakeshore Lutheran grade schools alone, was tracking approximately 61 incoming freshman. To date we are so excited to share that we have 77 incoming freshman registered! In addition, our international student program currently has 15 students coming next year, and we could have more if we could provide housing for more. We have also seen more interest from families that have their kids enrolled in public schools. TO GOD BE THE GLORY! A reception rate of 65%, which we feel is conservative, over the next 5 years shows steady increase. When considering our Lakeshore Lutheran grade schools they too are seeing an increase in enrollment!

At this time, we are looking to provide our current and future students with a facility that allows us to effectively carry out the ministry and grow our student body. The Building Our Future on Christ Campaign will be designed for today’s needs as well as our future needs. The Building Our Future On Christ Campaign was started in 2019 with the idea of building a gym, worship area, weight room, and renovation of certain areas of the school with building security as the focus. The price tag on this project increased significantly to the point where we had to take a step back and reconsider a different way. Back to the drawing board we went in August of 2022. The solution was to build in phases, with the first phase being a gymnasium and locker rooms with a stretch goal of a fitness center as funding becomes available. The gym will be on the east side of the school as you will see in the site plan. The price tag on Phase One (without the stretch goal of the fitness center) is $8.7M.  For future phases, God willing, we are hoping to plan for a fitness center, additional classrooms, a worship center, and a kitchen near our current commons/cafeteria.

MLHS has been blessed with a lot of support in pledges and donations. To date, $3.8M has come in donations and pledge payments, and there are $1.6M pledge payments to come in! In addition to that, MLHS has accumulated $43,000 in interest. In the early stages of our campaign we were also able to pay off the $540,000 debt from previous campaigns. After campaign expenses, we currently have in the bank $2.8M. Thank you to all of you for your support in prayers and gifts! Please continue to pray for your alma mater, and ask for your consideration in also supporting your high school financially if you are able. More information about the Building Our Future on Christ Campaign can be found at www.mlhslancers.org/campaign, including donation information. Please help Manitowoc Lutheran reach more students and families in the community with the grace and mercy Jesus has to offer by donating to this project. Thank you!

Veterans Breakfast and Worship Service

For the second straight year the MLHS service group Shining Through Christ hosted our annual Veterans breakfast and worship service. This year we were honored to welcome 63 visitors into our building as we recognized and thanked those who served our nation.

The morning began with breakfast served in the MLHS commons by our students in Shining Through Christ.  After breakfast all of our guests and students joined together for a worship service in the gymnasium. Pastor Stephen Melso (Bethany, Manitowoc) was the guest pastor. We were reminded of the many rich blessings we have in this country, namely the freedom to worship our Lord and Savior, thanks in part to the service of our veterans. The worship service was edified through song by our choirs and the MLHS symphonic band.

Following the worship service, WELS Military Services Committee Secretary, Paul Wolfgramm (former Infantry Marine), presented about his life in the military. We give a special thank you to everyone who helped make this great a great success! Those of you who missed it this year, we hope to see you next year! The date is set for Wednesday, November 8, 2023. Please help us spread the word! All Veterans are encouraged to join!

Grandparents Day 2022 Sets Record Attendance!

Each year we are blessed to open the doors of our school to the grandparents of our students. In October we welcomed 216 grandparents and visitors into our school, our largest Grandparents Day celebration to date!

Grandparents are welcomed at school by their grandchild. They join students in their classes, enjoy lunch together, and participate in a question and answer session with our students. The greatest blessing of all...the entire student body, faculty/staff and visitors celebrate our risen Savior in worship and song. This year Pastor Dave Ruddat (Immanuel, Shirley WI) brought us the truth of God's promises.

Join The Lancer Network Today!

We are in the early stages of creating a Lancer alumni network! The short-term goal is to create a list of alumni who are willing to help current students learn about careers and industries for which they don’t currently have any contacts. To learn more and take a short survey, please click below; it takes less than five minutes and we will never sell your contact information. To learn more and take a short survey please click below, it takes less than five minutes and we will never solicit your information. Thanks for the help in passing along the word!

Planning a Reunion? We are here to help!

Please contact the Mission Advancement Department when when you begin the process; we have many options to take advantage of when planning your reunion:

SAVE THE DATE

Let us do the work and send out a Save the Date notification email. MLHS recommends that you send this out six months prior to the reunion. (A postcard will be mailed to any classmates who do not have an email)

  • MLHS can design the save the date announcement/image. All we need from you is the following: (If you have a design in mind we can work with you.)
    • Date of the Reunion
    • Time of Reunion
    • Location of Reunion
    • Any extra information you want on there.
    • If you have an image you would like included you can attach it to your reply.

Please Note: You will receive a list of your classmates and their contact information to verify before we send out the Save the Date. That list will come to your email soon, so watch for that.

INVITATION

Let us do the work and send out your Class Reunion invitation. MLHS recommends that you send this out six to eight weeks in advance of your reunion. The invitation will look similar to the save the date, but will include all of the detail about your reunion that you provide.

MLHS is happy to help promote your reunion through our social media, website, and upcoming publications. If you form a social media group, we can share a link to that as well!

Let us put together a Class Reunion Booklet for you to share!

This booklet would contain any updated information that your classmates want to share. Their updates are collected by having them all fill out an online form. A link to that form would be included on the Save the Date email/mailing, or on the invite, whichever you prefer.

MLHS will print them all out for you and have them available for you to share at the class reunion. A digital copy can also be sent to everyone. This is a nice feature especially for those that are not able to make it to the reunion.

A lot has changed since you have graduated, and we would love to share these blessings with you. This is a guided tour with lots of fun facts and maybe even some stories you didn’t know about. These tours tend to bring out memories from your time at MLHS. You might even learn about something you never even knew about!

If you would like someone to come to your celebration and give a presentation on MLHS, or be available for a short Question and Answer Session, we can line up someone to do just that!

Would you like an MLHS representative to come and take some updated class pictures? Don’t worry about finding someone in the building to take the picture! Just let us know and we can provide someone to take a class picture and some candids too! For 1 hour of your reunion we can capture the memories for you!

If you would like MLHS to put together a short video of your times here at MLHS from photos that we have on file or photos submitted from your classmates, we can do that too! This feature will depend on whether there is enough turned in to make a montage. Some classes have each person’s senior picture on the screen with any updated photo they submit along side of it. Sort of like a “that was then, this is now” type display. Of course, all of this depends on what can be pulled together. On the Save the Date and Invitation, we would include instructions on how classmates could submit their photos or short video clips for the montage.
