Curriculum Coordinator Units of Study The first round of professional development days were held in August for K-2, 3-5, and 6-8. Charla Meyer, a CESA 7 Literacy Specialist, led us through Unit 1 for Reading (K-8) and Phonics (K-2). I have set up an email list serve with the teachers in attendance, myself, and Charla for continued communication throughout implementation. Future dates are set for planning Units 2-5. Please see the schedule below for future dates. The Teachers College Reading and Writing Project has created a video and guide that explains the alignment of the Units of Study to Scarborough’s Reading Rope (think “Science of Reading”). This video is approximately 2 hours long, but can be viewed in different segments for those who are interested. See the Link to the video and guide below. Check out this new website from TCRWP if you are interested in learning more about Lucy Calkins and her thoughts on The Reading Wars. There are videos, articles, documents, and more for you to browse. Sadlier Math A LLS Sadlier Math training session was scheduled for Friday, August 17th from 9am – 10:30pm. Below is a link to a recorded Sadlier Math training session for those who were unable to attend. Religion / Theology Curriculum Team- Canceled! We will no longer be forming a LLS Religion / Theology Curriculum Team. CLS has formed a Theology Taskforce for this same work. They held their first meeting in June. The team consists of 20 PreK-12 teachers along with representation from MLC and NPH. Melanie Giddings was called part time to lead this endeavor. After communicating with Melanie, they plan on creating PreK through 12th grade standards and a framework for this Theology curriculum by early 2025. We will simply wait for them to complete their work and adopt it as LLS. Science Curriculum Team I am seeking members for our new Science Curriculum Team. This team will begin working in late October or early November. If you are passionate about science, we would love to have you on the team. I am hoping to have each school and grade level (K-8) represented on the team. This team will meet once per month during the school day. In the past, we have typically met on Friday afternoons. Lunch is provided. Please reach out to Corey Marohn (cmarohn@mlhslancers.org) if you are interested. Early Childhood A survey was sent out to our Early Childhood Directors last month. This survey will help me to better serve our early childhood programs. I have used this survey to help determine professional development topics we can offer as LLS. In the past, we have worked with Work and Family Consulting for these offerings. I am currently working with Becky Lindenburg at Christ-St. Peter to plan some early childhood professional development offerings. Becky previously served as a professor of early childhood education at Wisconsin Lutheran College before recently accepting the call to Christ-St. Peter. More information will be shared in the future once these dates are finalized. LLS SPED Team Team members- Heidi Alfred (Bethany), Carrie Ott (Immanuel), Lacey Schneider (First German), Rachel Nemitz (St. John’s, Newtonburg), Joe Cook (UW-Oshkosh & Reedsville Public Schools), Amy McCargar (St. John’s, Two Rivers), Naomi Raddatz (St. John’s, Newtonburg), Keturah Hochmuth (MLHS) and Corey Marohn (LLS & MLHS) Our Lakeshore Lutheran Schools Special Education team met on 9/7 to create our plan for the school year. One hurdle for many schools is completing the K-3 reading and math Fastbridge assessments. This is essential for accurate data. Part of our plan for 2023-2024: - This team is preparing a training date for our K-3 teachers that are interested in attending. We will walk our LLS teachers in attendance through the different components, creating binders, printing materials, and other aspects for you to consider when utilizing these K-3 assessments.
- Interventionist Virtual Roundtable- Thursday, October 12th @ 4pm (An invite will be sent out as we get closer).
- This virtual roundtable is for any interventionist or teacher that would like to attend. An invite will be sent to all LLS teachers. This is a chance for us to collaborate, share ideas, and ask questions as we consider how to best serve our students. Several members of our LLS SPED Team will be in attendance. Please feel free to join if you are interested. Our plan is do host one virtual roundtable per month.
- August (2024) training (LLS professional development days below) to utilize Fastbridge for interventions and progress monitoring.
Fastbridge Our LLS SPED team members are very impressed with Fastbridge. The data provided, targeted interventions offered, and progress monitoring capabilities help equip our schools to better serve our students. We have several schools that are using each component of FAST very effectively. If you are uncertain about any aspect of FAST, please reach out and I will attempt to put you in touch with someone who can help. Please remember to utilize the training modules offered by FAST. They are very well done! Last year, LLS assessed just over 600 students. This year, I have uploaded 802 students as of 9/8. The use of FAST continues to grow in our LLS. If you need help with your student roster, please reach out. If you have a new “Fastbridge Administrator” at your school, please let me know as well so I can add them to the email list. August PD - Our 2024 summer PD days will be held the first week in August due to district convention. I will plan on alternating in the future for this reason (2025- June, 2026- August, etc.) Please reserve this week on your calendars!
- The format for these days will remain the same as last year. We will have one day for early childhood, one day offered by the LLS SPED Team, and one day for our K-8 curriculum work.
- Topic- Our LLS SPED Team will be offering professional development on using Fastbridge for interventions and progress monitoring.
LLS Technology Team I am looking to form a LLS Technology team. This team will begin functioning during the 2024-2025 school year. If you have a passion for educational technology for your school or in your classroom, we would love to have you. Please reach out to me if this is a team you would consider serving on. |
